Care: A Faculty Learning Community on the Emotional Labor of Teaching
Community Leader: Grace Savoy-Burke, Engaged Teaching Scholar
Eligibility: Those who teach full time or part time. (Due to the nature of our conversations, this group is not open to students and TAs.)
Meeting Times: Sessions will be determined by the group's availability during the Fall 2026 semester and Spring 2027 semester.
The Care FLC aims to provide educators with a supportive space to discuss the emotional labor of teaching and a tool kit for navigating discussions with students about mental health.
Throughout the Fall 2026 semester, members of the learning community will work towards a certificate in Mental Health First Aid. We will come together to discuss and reflect on what we’ve learned, how to apply it in practice, and how to best support ourselves and each other as we navigate these emotionally challenging conversations.
In Spring 2027, members of the learning community will help facilitate discussions open to the larger WVU teaching community centered on emotional aspects of teaching and mentoring students.
