About the Engaged Teaching Scholars program
Engaged Teaching Scholars demonstrate a commitment to effective teaching and a willingness to share their effective practices with other educators. The goal of the Engaged Teaching Scholars program is to better integrate faculty members into the WVU Teaching and Learning Center, while supporting their scholarly teaching efforts. Engaged Teaching Scholars, in consultation with the Director of the Center, will identify and produce a scholarly teaching project to benefit those who teach across West Virginia University. Selection Criteria and Appointment
Interested faculty members will complete an application outlining their proposed project and their motivation for joining the Engaged Teaching Scholars program. The Director of the WVU Teaching and Learning Center, in consultation with the Office of the Provost, will inform the selected Engaged Teaching Scholar of their appointment.
The nine-month term of the Engaged Teaching Scholar will begin in August 2026. The WVU Teaching and Learning Center will provide Engaged Teaching Scholars with a stipend in the amount of $2,000. To support Engaged Teaching Scholars in their professional development, a book allowance of $150 is provided towards titles on teaching, learning, research methods, and/or faculty development.
Responsibilities
Engaged Teaching Scholars are led by the Director of the WVU Teaching and Learning Center. The Engaged Teaching Scholar represents the faculty of their campus through service to the WVU Teaching and Learning Center, and will propose new events, programs, and services based on the needs of their campus. They will encourage instructors on their campus to share their effective teaching practices through the WVU Teaching and Learning Center.
Engaged Teaching Scholars, in consultation with the Director of the WVU Teaching and Learning Center, will identify and produce a scholarly teaching project to benefit those who teach across West Virginia University. Examples of scholarly teaching include, but are not limited to: Developing a workshop, seminar, or program; Hosting a faculty learning community, teaching interest group, or book group; Dissemination of empirical scholarship on teaching and/or teaching practitioner scholarship.
Engaged Teaching Scholars provide event and programming support, including:
- Attendance at regularly scheduled events in the WVU Teaching and Learning Center (minimum of 4 per semester, as schedules allow) and facilitating table activities (distribute handouts, answer questions, keep participants on task in small groups).
- Escorting a group of new faculty members during New Faculty Orientation activities.
- Serving on interview committees and providing input on the selection and appointment of full-time educational development staff for the WVU Teaching and Learning Center.
- Providing support for our annual teaching conference, including peer review of conference session proposals from instructors across West Virginia University.
